Abstract:
U.S. Airports represents airport grounds and airport runways within the United States. All airports have a boundary, and most have at least one runway.
Purpose:
U.S. Airports provides the boundaries for thousands of airports and runways. There are many attributes that describe each airport, for example, location id (airport code), owner, elevation, congestion level, large certified air carrier enplanements, foreign enplanements, hub size, and tower type.

General
Logical consistency report:
The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using either tools in ArcGIS or ESRI SDC Data Development Kit Professional 2 (DDKP2). The SDC data set is then imported into a file geodatabase to verify and validate the geometry.
Completeness report:
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
Positional Accuracy
Horizontal accuracy report:
Horizontal positional accuracy is dependent on geographic area. In most areas, accuracy is between 5 and 25 meters (16 and 82 feet). In some areas, accuracy is off by up to several tens of meters (100 feet or more). In the poorest areas, accuracy is off by up to 100 meters (328 feet).

Process description:
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Extracted the Land Use data sets from Tele Atlas MultiNet North America v. 2010.03 and merged them into a nationwide data set. Selected the airport ground and runway features. Removed all fields except FEATTYP, NAME, and ACRON. Renamed field FEATTYP to MNFC. Renamed field ACRON to LOC_ID. Attached and formatted the fields from 2009 Data Update U.S. Airports (source dates - 1991, 1992, and 1994). Put a "-999" value into all records that did not find a match for the field ELEVATION. Put a "0" value into all records that did not find a match for the fields LRGCERTENP, COMM_ENP, AIRTAXIENP, FOREIGNENP and INTRANENP. Added field FEATTYPE and copied its values from MultiNet FEATTYP descriptions. Converted the data set to SDC. Created ArcGIS® layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices.

Click on title to toggle opening and closing all content (metadata sections). Page header includes menu links that tab to invidual metadata sections. Page footer links to http://www.fgdc.gov/ web site. Ignores metadata XML elements that contain all whitespace (spaces, carriage returns, tabs, line feeds, etc). Over 40 metadata elements are parsed to respect line breaks introduced by metadata author to either start a new line or a new paragraph, depending on number of consecutive line breaks and white space characters present. Over 40 metadata elements are searched for internal URL strings (that contain a "://" or "www.") and converts each one to a hypertext link. Browse graphic image and description displayed together on same page if image is JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, or BMP. Other browse graphic file types such as PDF popup in separate window. Enumerated attribute domain values listed in HTML table, which can be opened and closed. All FGDC metadata elements supported. FGDC Process Steps include full descriptions of each Data Source Used and Produced as long as the value of Process Step's Source Citation Used (srcused) and Source Citation Produced (srcprod) metadata element match a Data Source Citation (srccitea) metadata element value. All ESRI metdata elements supported except for Binary elements used to include thumbnail image. Includes ESRI Geoprocessing History, ESRI Feature Terms, ESRI Geometric Network, ESRI Subtype, ESRI Relationship Class, ESRI Topology, and ESRI Raster elements. Topology rules are named and described as shown on the ESRI topology_rules_poster.pdf included with ArcGIS software.
